I once met a girl at a party, and we ended up spending the night together. In the morning, she rushed off because she was late, while I took my time having breakfast and showering. Then, I noticed her earrings on the table. They were old and heavy, and she had told me they belonged to her great-grandmother.

I put them in my pocket and went to her house to give them back. A woman who looked like her mother answered the door, wearing a robe. “Please give these to Julia,” I said. She seemed surprised, took the earrings hesitantly, and gave me a strange look.

— She left them at my place yesterday.

— Yesterday?

— Yes.

There was a pause.

Then she said, “But Julia died 6 years ago!” I stood there, frozen, not knowing what to say.

Just then, Julia appeared, running out and shouting, “Mum! Stop joking with him!” Her mum laughed and invited me for coffee. That’s how I met my future mother-in-law.
